|Wrist Watch is a Reminder of Time|
Solomon popularly known as “the wise king” knows the value of time, and the relationship that exist between human efforts, time and opportunity. Many people misconceive the true meaning of the above biblical quotation. People often think that it means effort doesn’t count in life, but that the opportunity that one gets is what ultimately determines one's outcome in life. That is not true, there is no such reality as that. It is an indisputable fact that opportunity plays a key role in one’s success in life, but when opportunity comes and one is not prepared, such opportunity becomes useless.
Let us take a look at these paradoxes:
The race is not to the swift-------Is the race to the slow and sluggish?
The battle is not to the strong-------Is the battle to the weak?
Bread is not to the wise-------Is bread to the fools?
Riches not for men of understanding-------Are riches for men that lack understanding?
Favor not to men of skill--------Is favor to the unskillful men?
Time and chance does not change things on their own accord but the efforts put into time, is what usually bring about change. What king Solomon was indirectly telling us is that the qualities (being swift, ability, wisdom, understanding, skill) at the left side are critical to success in life, but they have to be backed up by opportunity. Opportunity in its very nature is useless without them.
What then is the role of time? This will take us back to examine an ancient insight so as to have a clear understanding of the role of time in relation to human effort and opportunity.
‘’There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heaven, a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn, and a time to dance, a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain, a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace.’’ –Eccl 3:1-8
Time is one of the greatest assets life provides to enable us carve out our destiny. I wrote exhaustively on this fact in my article; Time: Your Greatest asset. Indeed there is time for everything. Life is in phases and each phase has certain responsibilities that ought to be carried out for the smooth running of the subsequent phases which if not performed would harm one’s future. The time we have is meant to be used to work towards our desired outcomes. This is so because to obtain any result in life, you must pay its full price in advance. Opportunity would come whether we like it or not, but only those who are ready, and possess what it takes to grab such opportunity would be eligible. An opportunity unprepared for will ever remain useless when it comes. Abraham Lincoln once said, ‘’I will prepare and my opportunity will come.’’
So many people fail in life because of the misplacement of priority. One of the uniqueness of great achievers is the ability to prioritize; ability to decode what ought to be done at every phase of their lives and doing it without procrastination. I am strongly persuaded that if we take care of the present, the future will take care of itself, and that if we take care of today, tomorrow will take care of itself.
The relationship that exists between time, human effort and opportunity is that time will offer you the opportunity to get yourself prepared, and it will as well bring opportunity to your door step. Time will be your best friend if you know how to manage it, but it can as well be your worst enemy if you fail to rightly deploy it. Doing the right thing at the right time, and putting first thing first is therefore one of the keys that lead to success.
