Actions And Consequences

For every action you take, there is a consequence

“A mountain is composed of tiny grains of earth. The ocean is made up of tiny drops of water. Even so, life is but an endless series of little details, actions, speeches and thoughts. And the consequences whether good or bad of even the least of them are far-reaching.”- Swami Sivananda, Hindu spiritual teacher and founder of Divine Life Society (DLS)

“An unexamined life is not worth living.”- Socrates, Greek Philosopher.

Action is simply defined as the act or process of doing something, typically to achieve an aim, while consequence is the effect, result or outcome of something occurring earlier. To put it in a simpler way, consequences are the outcomes or results of our actions, which may be positive or negative depending on the action taken earlier. Check the example below:

Action: a 15 yr old ss1 student engage in sexual intercourse with one of her seniors in ss3

1. Three months later, she was diagnonised to be pregnant

2. She was sent away from school

3. She became frustrated and ashamed of her self

4. She later died as a result of abortion

Taking a critical look at your life, are you satisfied or happy with your achievement? Are you really living the kind of life you desire to live? Are you earning as much as you desire to earn? Are you as healthy as you wish?

One thing you should realize is that the current realities in your life are outcomes or effects of your past actions. Things don’t just happen, they are created consciously or unconsciously through the actions we take. It is your responsibility to take a deep look at your life and identify certain actions that are creating unpleasant results in your life, and discontinue such action as soon as possible. I am passionate about conscious living. To live consciously mean to have a clear awareness of everything that is going on in your life. It mean to be aware that your actions create your outcome, and to deliberately choose to take actions that will help you get the kind of consequence, outcome, effect or result that you want. PEOPLE WHO LIVE CONSCIOUSLY DON’T ALLOW THINGS TO HAPPEN TO THEM, THEY MAKE THINGS HAPPEN.

‘’You are where you are right now because of the action you have taken, and maybe the inaction you have taken’’- Steve Maraboli, life-changing speaker, Bestselling Author and Behavioral Science Academic.

“There are risks and costs to action. But they are far less than the long range risks of comfortable inaction.” -John F. Kennedy, the 35th president of the United State of America.

I stated earlier that action creates outcome or consequence. One other thing I want you to be aware of is the effect of inaction. Inaction means not taking action. It means living things as they are or taking things for granted. The truth is that inaction is as effective as consciously taking action. Life is designed in such a way that you can never be on the fence; you either create the kind of life you want or allow life to throw anything at you. Everything has a default, if you don’t create your own design, you will automatically be reverted to the default. In other words, IF YOU DON’T DETERMINE OUTCOME, OUTCOME HAS A WAY OF DETERMINING THEMSELVES. You should also know that when things are left as they are, they will always go from bad to worse. For example you had a little injury on your leg. Naturally, applying First Aid and treating it promptly we make it heal, but if you neglect it and allow it to be as it is, the minor injury will develop into a sore, and before know it, it can get infected and consequently lead to your death.

For many of us, we know what we want for our lives, but we have refused to take the right action that will make our dreams a reality. TO BECOME A SUCCESSFUL PERSON, WE MUST KNOW ALL THAT WILL NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE KIND OF OUTCOME WE DESIRE AND GIVE IT ALL IT TAKES TO GET SUCH OUTCOME. IF YOU DON’T DO IT, NOBODY WILL DO IT FOR YOU.

Life is designed in such a way that no human being can outsmart it. The truth is that it takes time to see the consequences or the results of our actions. We are often persistent in doing the wrong things and assume all is well forgetting that the consequence will definitely show up one day. The consequence of your action may tarry, but it will definitely show up one day. When you sow a seed, you don’t reap the fruit the same day. It will take its natural course to germinate, grow and produce fruit in due season.

NEVER ALLOW THE TEMPORARY PLEASURE BENEFITTED IN TAKING CERTAIN ACTION BLINDFOLD YOU FROM THE GREATER CONSEQUENCE OF TAKEN SUCH ACTION. For example; sex may give you some pleasure at the moment, but in the long run you may also end up with unwanted pregnancy or being a victim of sexual transmitted disease such as HIV. Another example is this; you are rich today, but instead of investing your money into asset that can bring you more money in the future, you resolve to buying the latest car and living in the best apartment in town. By the time your current source of income is terminated, you will likely find yourself in deep financial mess. Let’s assume you work in a company and you are sacked, you will not be able to cope with your extravagant lifestyle anymore. You will likely end up selling the materials things you have acquired with your money and by then it will be too late. If you are still very young, I want you to consider seriously the current lifestyle you are living against the kind of future you want. If you know it won’t get you there in the long run, you have to make quick adjustment. If not, you will end up regretting. SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE DON’T ACT BASED ON TEMPORARY PLEASURE, THEY ACT BASED ON THE LONG-TERM CONSEQUENCE OF THEIR ACTION.

“If people know the consequences of their action, they will never do it”- Socrates, Greek Philosopher.

The truth is that we live in a free world where you can do whatever you feel like doing but you must always have it in mind that every of your actions come with its own consequence. Every action you take will definitely produce a result of its kind. Most often people do things that made them say “had I known” or regret certain action because of its negative consequence. This often occurs as a result of not considering the consequence of such action before engaging in it.

What action are you currently taking and what is the consequence? One thing you should know is that when you consistently take a kind of action, after a while taking such action becomes a habit. When it becomes a habit, it becomes very difficult to stop. And what you do consistently will definitely determine your future outcome whether good or bad. If you take a critical look at your environment, you will see men and women in their 50s, 60s and even more still doing odd jobs to simply survive. The question you should ask is: how did they spend their youthful age? The purpose of the youthful age is for preparation for a happy adult life. If you live yours engaging in frivolities, then you are getting set for a disastrous adult life. My greatest fear is growing to become a failed adult, I don’t know about you.

In conclusion, ALWAYS WEIGH THE CONSEQUENCE OF EVERYTHING YOU DO BEFORE DOING IT. If you can begin this practice, you will develop the conscious living mentality, and become a creator of the events in your life rather than being a victim.
